Galway Bay fm newsroom – A delegation from the Aran Islands travelled to Brussels this week to discuss the compliance of its government subsidised air service with EU regulations.

The group met with representatives from the European Commission to discuss a study recently commissioned by the Department of the Gaeltacht to ascertain whether the public service obligation route complies with European regulations.

The current contract was awarded last September and covers a period of one year.

The meeting was facilitated by North West MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher and was also attended by MEPs Jim Higgins and Marian Harkin and Galway Deputies Eamon O’Cuiv and Noel Grealish.

Galway West Fianna Fail TD Eamon O’Cuiv said the criteria for the study was clearly explained and indicates that European regulations do not pose any threat to the service.

He says future funding of the service is a matter for national government to decide.
