Approval given to knock part of Lynch’s Castle

AIB Bank has been given the green light for a major redevelopment of the historic Lynch’s Castle in the city centre in plans that will see the consolidation of their regional operations and the doubling of staff numbers.
The bank had sought permission last year for the overhaul on what is a Protected Structure. The plans involve the demolition of later additions to the castle, including the removal of buttresses, and repairs to the existing castle.
They also include the construction of a new three storey building with a glazed facade on Upper Abbeygate Street which will house a new banking hall and offices.
Despite objections from local environmental watchdog group An Taisce and the City Council’s own Heritage Officer, planners have the go ahead for the overhaul.
“It is felt the development will not have a detrimental impact on the character and importance of Lynch’s Castle or the adjoining Protected Structure,” planners said.
