Applegreen sows seeds for new jobs in Ballinasloe

Plans to demolish and replace the Applegreen service station off the M6 motorway in Ballinasloe have been lodged with Galway County Council.

The project – which involves the demolition of the existing filling station and adjoining dwelling on the R446 – will create between twelve and fourteen full and part-time jobs.

Petrogas Group Ltd has sought permission to clear the site and construct a new single storey building (321 square metres) comprising a retail area (100 sq m) with an off licence, deli, seating area, toilets, storage and food preparation area.

A new forecourt with a canopy and four pump islands, as well as underground tanks will also be included.

“The existing filling station and dwelling are notably dated in appearance and detract from the visual amenity of this prominent location at the southern entry point into the town.

“The proposed development will be contemporary in appearance and will significantly enhance the visual amenity of the area. The general external finish will be a smooth render and there will be extensive glazing to the front.

“The provision of a food offering is standard in many Applegreen filling stations around the country, with many of the newer stations in fact offering multiple food offers. The food offers are firmly aimed at passing motorists who require a quick and convenient meal before getting back on the road.

“As such, the food offers do not compete with sit-down, table service offers provided in the town centre which are aimed at people looking to enjoy a relaxing meal where they can linger in a comfortable settling,” the application reads.

The proposed opening hours of the filling station are Monday to Sunday 7am-11pm, with a hatch providing service from 11pm to 7am. The hatch will serve fuel and retail only, and the food element will close at 11pm.

A decision on the application is expected from county planners at the beginning of November.
