Apple abandons plans for data centre in Athenry
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Apple is officially scrapping plans for a €850 million data centre in Athenry.
The project – which was set to create hundreds of jobs – had faced lengthy legal efforts in the Supreme Court to block it on environmental grounds.
The tech giant said delays in the approval process have forced it to make other plans – and it will not be able to move forward with the data centre in Athenry.
In a statement this morning, Apple said it’s a disappointing decision, but it won’t dampen the company’s enthusiasm for future projects in Ireland.
Paul Keane from the group ‘Athenry for Apple’ said it’s a massive loss.
