Appeals Board turns down bid for Tuam road bookies

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A bid to block a betting office being opened at the Tuam road in the city has been successful.

Galway City Council had initially granted planning permission to Emilie Linnane to change the restaurant at The Trappers Inn into a bookies.

However this decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála which has overruled the Council’s decision.

The appeal by Longford architect, Liam Madden, argued that gambling is a ‘mortal sin’ and should be ‘forbidden’.

He also raised concerns about sightlines for vehicles, parking and the policies of the City Development Plan.

An inspector for An Bord Pleanála assessed the appeal under several headings including access and parking, visual impact and amenities of the area.

In refusing permission for the bookmakers at The Trappers Inn, An Bord Pleanála states that the proposal doesn’t generally come within the zoning objective for the area.

The Board says that allowing a bookies shop to open at the Tuam Road would be contrary to the policy of the planning authority to protect these lands for industrial use.
