Plans to redevelop the well-known Taafes building in the city centre have been turned down.

An Bord Pleanála has refused to allow Gerry Barrett change the building into a new store.

City Council planners initially refused the plans as they had concerns over the impact of the development on the protected structure.

The developer appealled this decision to An Bord Pleanála, which has now also refused to allow it go ahead.

The Appeals Boards states that the revamp of Taaffes would “result in the loss of substantial amounts of late medieval fabric” of the protected structure.
