Plans for a residential and cafe development in Barna have been rejected.

An Bord Pleanala refused permission based on a consideration that the project would seriously impact visual amenity and the architectural conservation area.

The proposed plans set out to construct three terraced townhouses, one apartment, cafe and two detached houses as well as ancillary works, on the Pier Road in Freeport.

Galway County Council refused permission for the project in December last year stating that the development would be "out of character" with the area.

This decision was then appealed to An Bord Pleanala by the applicant Patricia D’arcy who argued that the height, scale and mass of the development are respectful to the urban fabric.
