Anthony Cunningham faces competition for Galway hurling job

Galway senior hurling manager Anthony Cunningham has come under significant pressure to hold onto his position.

There are three other candidates from inside the county nominated for the role for 2015 and other high profile figures linked with the job not ruled out of the running.

In addition to Cunningham, ex-Galway coach Mattie Kenny, who served under Cunningham at U-21 and senior level; current intermediate and U-21 boss Johnny Kelly, who managed Portumna to All-Ireland club glory; and former great Brendan Lynskey, a selector under Ger Loughnane’s regime, have also been nominated.

A number of high profile candidates have also been touted for the post, with the rumour mill offering up the likes of former Tipperary All-Ireland winning manager Liam Sheehy and Dublin boss Anthony Daly, who, it’s understood, is to meet his management team and the Board to discuss the future this week.

Galway Hurling Secretary Pat Kearney is not ruling out any other candidate, outside of those nominated, being considered, saying that “whoever is on the interview panel can decide to interview other people”.

“We would always say that the management committee of Galway GAA reserve the right, if they see fit, to consider any other candidate that they think should be the manager. So, that means it is open to anyone,” he says.

“There will be interviews taking place but we would hope to have a manager appointed before the next round of the Galway hurling championship games on the weekend of September 14 or 21. Some of the candidates are away on holidays at the moment so there will be nothing happening for another two weeks.”

Meanwhile, Galway minor hurlers will look to build on their recent facile victory over Ulster champions Antrim when they face Munster holders Limerick in this weekend’s All-Ireland semi-final at Croke Park (1.30pm).
