Another rural post office comes under threat in Galway
The axe is hanging over another County Galway post office – forcing residents to come out in strength to make clear their opposition to any such closure.
Around 150 local people gathered in the local hall in Cappataggle where many spoke about the impact on the village if their post office, which also has a shop and is attached to the local pub.
MEPs, TDs, local county councillors and representatives from some rural organisations were also in attendance as speaker after speaker spoke of their outrage over the closure of small post offices.
The flavour of the meeting was very similar to those held in Barnaderg in North Galway where the local post office is also under threat.
Speakers from the floor spoke about the inconvenience the closure of the post office would result in, but many also about a further erosion of rural services.
There has been a post office in Cappataggle since the 1860 and recently the postmistress Christina Dooley passed away.
The post office is now being operated by her daughter and son-in-law but in the absence of An Post appointing a replacement postmaster, a threat hangs over its future.
At the moment there are at least four post offices in County Galway which are threatened with closure as locals try to save them.
