Another bad night for United as Horgan error proves fatal
Galway United 0
Longford Town 1

GALWAY United’s disappointing season went from bad to worse on Friday night when a decent display went unrewarded after Kevin Horgan dropped a clanger to see United throw away all three points at home to Longford Town.
The game was scoreless and heading into the 83rd minute when Conor Barry failed to win possession from a United throw on their right wing, with Longford moving the ball across the middle of the park.
Shane Elworthy stuck his boot through the ball, sending a looping pass into the United penalty area. Horgan came racing off his line, screaming for the ball, but as he jumped to gather in his midriff, he clattered into Callum Warfield, spilling the ball, and Aaron McCabe had the simplest of tasks to roll the ball home into an empty net.
Alan Murphy had made five changes to the side which draw with Cobh Ramblers the previous weekend, with Jack Lynch, Maurice Nugent, Shane Doherty, Chris Horgan, and Tim Partheons all coming into the side.
Horgan in particular had a solid game, while Nugent also got stuck in, but unfortunately for United, he had a nightmare in front of goal. The vast majority of United’s chances fell to the Irish Universities international, but he never once troubled Lee Steacy in the Longford Town goal.
It took a Horgan double-act to deny the visitors an opening goal in the 12th minute, with Kevin saving a goal-bound Aodh Dervin header; and Chris blocking the follow-up shot from Dylan Grimes.
