Aniar chef Jp cooks up drama with a difference

He’s best known as the man behind the Michelin-winning Aniar restaurant in Galway City, but its chef-owner Jp McMahon has also turned his hand to writing for theatre.

His debut drama, Irish Food. A Play, received a rehearsed reading at Druid last September as part of culture night before going on the premiere at the Dublin Fringe, where it had a sold-out run.

Now it’s returning to Galway for a short run at Aniar from March 25-29.  This immersive, site-responsive theatre experience explores the power and pleasure of Irish food and the memories and nostalgia that come with it, says the chef and playwright.

It originally emerged from the answers to a survey on Irish food that Jp sent out to the public last year as part of a project for his PhD on drama at NUIG – he’s been exploring the use of Irish food in 20th Century Irish drama,
