Date Published: {J}
Renowned Donegal traditional music group Altan are celebrating their 25th anniversary with a tour of Ireland that will see them play the Town Hall Theatre, Galway on Friday, June 4 at 8.00pm.
With their award-winning recordings, ranging from old Irish songs to hard hitting reels and jigs, and with their dynamic live performances, Altan have entertained audiences from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle. For more than two decades, the band members have been committed to bringing traditional music, particularly that of the Donegal fiddlers and singers, to contemporary audiences.
Altan first began in the early 1980s, founded by Belfast flute player Frankie Kennedy and Gweedore singer and fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. Joined through the years by bouzouki player Ciarán Curran, fiddler Ciarán Tourish, guitarists Mark Kelly and Dáithí Sproule and accordion player Dermot Byrne, and despite the untimely death of Frankie Kennedy, they have created a band that has grown in popularity and influence. Altan have gained gold and platinum status in Ireland with their record sales and have won numerous awards in the music business as one of the most popular bands playing traditional folk or world music in the world.
This tour celebrates an illustrious 25 years that have seen Altan appear in venues worldwide including the Albert Hall, Hollywood Bowl and Sydney Opera House, and collaborate with a diverse range of artists including Dolly Parton, The Chieftains, Bonnie Raitt and The Rolling Stones and orchestras including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Royal Scottish Opera Orchestra.
The concert will include tracks from Altan’s newest album, Altan: 25th Anniversary Celebration. The album is a mix of tunes and songs including Red Red Rose, Mo Ghaoil, Bog a’Lochain and The Roseville.
