Almost 30 percent of deliveries at Galway public hospitals by Caesarean
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost 30 percent of all baby deliveries at University Hospital Galway and Portiuncula Ballinalsoe were by caesarean section, 8 per cent less than the country’s highest rate
The figures published today show huge variations in the C section rates at Ireland’s 19 public maternity units.
St Luke’s in Kilkenny has the highest rate of caesarean sections at 38 per cent, while Sligo General has the lowest rate in the country at 19 per cent.
The World health Organisation recommends a rate of between 10 and 15 per cent.
Meanwhile, Portiuncula hospital has one of the lowest rates of episiotomy at 13 percent, while the national maternity hospital at Holles street had the highest rate at 27 %.
Episiotomy is a minor surgery that widens the vagina for childbirth.
