IT’S been a Race Week like no other for Galway Gardaí . . . instead of heaving crowds on the city streets at night and daytime traffic jams, it’s been all quiet on the western front – so far.

Garda Chief Superintendent, Tom Curley, told the Connacht Tribune that while the vast majority of people had ‘been playing ball’ in terms of the COVID guidelines, there was a strong onus on everyone to keep up the good work.

“While the city centre has been busy enough during the day, the nights have been very quiet. People just seem to staying in their own groups in the restaurants, hotels and restaurants once evening time comes,” said Tom Curley.

However, he pledged that Gardaí would be maintaining a high-visibility presence during the course of the holiday period and would be strictly enforcing the ban on public drinking that applies to most areas of Galway city.

“Over the course of the past week or so, we’ve had to issue a number of on-the-spot fines to people who didn’t comply with our requests not to consume alcohol in public areas.

“This was probably the main area of non-compliance we encountered over the past week or so and it’s an issue that we will be strictly monitoring over the coming days,” said the Chief Superintendent.
