All-Ireland hero sheds trademark ponytail after three-in-a-row success
One of the most recognisable footballers in the country is now facing the prospect of a period of anonymity – but his Corofin and Galway teammates are confident that Kieran Molloy’s performances will ensure his only fade will be on his flowing locks!
For the swashbuckling Corofin defender has taken the drastic step of cutting off his trademark ponytail – and he will cut a very different dash when he next appears in the saffron and green of Corofin or the maroon and white of Galway.
When he and some of this Corofin team-mates visited Cummer National School after their three-in-a-row All-Ireland club success, many of the pupils had to look twice to make sure that it was the same player that was gracing their classrooms.
The enigmatic and yet unassuming wing back has achieved notoriety in his relatively short career playing senior football for his attacking style of play . . . but also for his very distinctive hairstyle.
He made a pledge to himself that if Corofin achieved the three-in-a-row, he would cut it all off and donate any proceeds to a chosen charity – and that he did two days after their historic achievement in Croke Park.
While many would have thought that the 2019 Club Player of the Year might have contemplated leaving that onerous task to one of the well-known high street barbers, the reality was somewhat different.
In fact the job fell to sub goalkeeper Tom Healy who, equipped with shears in hand, removed Kieran Molloy’s signature look – and even those present in the salubrious surroundings of Canavan’s of Belclare were stunned by the change one clip made!
