Alex loves life in the fast lane

Alex O'Grady gets a hero's welcome from his Carrabane NS friends.

With a national title already under his belt, and an international one in the bag as of last weekend, ten-year-old Alex O’Grady from Loughrea is fast becoming one to watch on the world karting stage.

The fifth class Carrabane National School pupil was in receipt of much acclaim from his classmates as he returned to school on Monday, bringing with him the World Champion of the IAME Minime Cadet Class title from the famed Le Mans Circuit in France.

Reflecting on an exciting few days, Alex’s father Colm says it was a “rollercoaster” for the family, but a brilliant experience for them all.

Despite his young age, Alex is an old hand at this stage, having got his first kart at just four years old – something Colm says was spurred by his own experience of motor sport.

“I used to race in what was called ‘125 Gearbox Class’ at a national level around the 1998 to 2003 period – I was useless,” he laughs, adding “no seriously, I was!”
