Aki comes to the rescue of out-of-sorts Connacht men
Benetton 17
Connacht 19
REAL world rugby isn’t all glitz and glamour. Over the course of a PRO14 season you’re going to have some bad games and this was one of them. Both sides lacked composure throughout the 80 minutes in Treviso. One, in the shape of the home team Benetton feeling the weight of pressure, the other, Connacht seemingly struggling to find their usual spark.
That Connacht managed to rescue this with a try from the last play of the game should be the main focus here. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Andy Friend coached Connacht sides seem to do this more than any other. It’s a knack for grinding out results on days when everything seems to be going wrong. That’s why they are a Champions Cup qualifier year after year.
Still though, on nights like this, Connacht can look like a side that don’t belong in the top four or five sides in the competition. Treviso were without close to 20 players, including 15 with the national side at Six Nations camp. They haven’t won a game all season and were rank outsiders. Connacht were missing just two with Ireland and even had the last minute addition of Bundee Aki to their starting line up to boost their arsenal. This should have been straightforward.
