AIB has cleared the final planning hurdle in its bid to carry out major refurbishment works on the historic Lynch’s Castle in the city centre.

An Bord Pleanála has granted the bank permission to demolish modern additions to the castle on Shop St and build a new three storey building behind it.

Environmental watchdog An Taisce appealed the plans to An Bord Pleanála after City planners gave the green light to AIB.

The Bord however agreed with the city council and granted AIB permission subject to 20 conditions.

The Bord has ordered that all archeological features be retained and that all stonework reflects the colour and texture of the stonework of Lynch’s Castle.

It’s also ordered detailed surveys be carried out of the rear walls of the castle to preserve the architectural integrity of the protected structures.
