Ahascragh native Ronan Mullen has been elected a senator.

The political novice has pulled off a great coup in winning one of three seats on the NUI panel

The 36 year old columnist, lecturer and barrister took the second seat after Senator Joe O’Toole within the past hour.

Brendan Ryan won the third seat, with Fergal Quinn narrowly losing his senate seat.

Ronan Mullen is the son of Tom Mullen of Woodlawn and Maura Mullen nee Hobbs of Killimor and is a cousin of well known Fine Gael County councillor Michael Mullins.

Meanwhile, Ballinasloe’s Joe Callinan has been eliminated from the count for a seat on the Seanad’s administrative panel.

The Fianna Fail former TD and farmer polled just under 70,000 votes, some 63,000 short of the quota needed to win a seat.
