AHASCRAGH/Fohenagh reshuffled their pack for Saturday’s opening round senior B hurling championship contest against Pearses at Duggan Park where they trumped their neighbours with spades to spare.

In turning the tables on Pearses from last year’s group meeting, Ahascragh/Fohenagh served notice that they will be more competitive in 2020 after only avoiding demotion thanks to a replay win over Abbeyknockmoy.

The big (and surprising) call by the Ahascragh/Fohenagh mentors proved a rewarding one. Seán Bleahene, a recognised attacker, was deployed at centre back with All-Star defender Padraic Mannion – scorer of three points – moving in the opposite direction.

Bleahene was a big physical presence at the heart of their defence and even thundered forward to smash over a rousing Ahascragh/Fohenagh score during an opening-half purple patch which saw them register five points in a three-minute spell.

It wasn’t, however, a blemish free display from Bleahene – he somehow allowed a late Tomas Flannery free to slip through his fingers into the Ahascragh/Fohenagh net – but the potential was obvious on an evening when Kevin Warde’s charges were by far the classier and sharper outfit.

Naturally, the Mannion brothers were central to a morale-boosting success. Either Padraic or Cathal could play anywhere at this level and still look comfortable. They fired over five points from play between them and, basically, ran the show.
