THE Henry Shefflin Galway hurling project took a significant and unexpected step forward in the backyard of the All-Ireland champions on Saturday evening.

Producing the county’s best performance in the league since dismantling Tipperary in the 2017 final at the same venue, Galway suddenly look like a team going somewhere.

And giving the Tribesmen’s six-point success more merit is that Limerick were on a mission to retrieve some lost ground after their surprise opening round loss to Wexford.

The Shannonsiders did make a blistering start in front of an expectant crowd of over 12,000, but it was soon evident that Galway were neither cowed nor intimated by Limerick’s reputation as being by far the best team in the land.

Galway hardly took a backward step all evening, instead throwing themselves into the exchanges with verve and vigour which bodes well for the summer. They were also aggressive and tackled like maniacs.

It meant Limerick’s carefully-crafted possession hurling through the lines came under repeated pressure and long before Gearóid Hegarty’s deserved red card early in the second-half, the hosts had been knocked off their stride.

Galway proved a revelation. They never blinked when Aaron Gillane expertly fired to the net after a Kyle Hayes delivery in the third minute, while their overall efficiency up front ensured they were always in contention in a hard-hitting contest.
