Acclaimed violinist to join RTÉ Orchestra for Leisureland date
The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will perform in Leisureland on Thursday April 27 (8pm) for the third time in three years, and this time will be accompanied by Vadim Gluzman on violin, under the baton of Daniel Cohen, in a concert being presented by Music for Galway.
The concert will feature John Kinsella’s Elegy for Strings, Gubaidulina’s Offertorium violin concerto, and Brahms’ Symphony No 3 in F major Op 90.
Dublin-born John Kinsella’s sublime Elegy for strings is full of shimmering, shadow-cast beauty. It provides a poetic prelude to Offertorium, Russian Sofia Gubaidulina’s searching, soaring violin concerto, with violinist Vadim Gluzman at its dark glittering helm.
Brahms’ third symphony boasts all the intricacy of his chamber music and the complexity of his works for piano in a deeply-felt masterpiece whose confessional intimacy is intensely moving. It was programmed to fit in with Music for Galway’s Aimez-vous Brahms? season, and offers the opportunity to sample one of the composer’s finest orchestral compositions.
Vadim Gluzman’s wide repertoire embraces new music and his performances are heard around the world through live broadcasts and a striking catalogue of award-winning recordings exclusively for the BIS label.
Daniel Cohen is in his second year as Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and this season he will conduct performances of Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and Il barbiere di Siviglia there. In 2017 he will also return to the Teatro Massimo di Palermo. Cohen also frequently works with the New Israeli Opera.
HIs orchestral engagements in the 2016/17 season include debuts with the Dresdner Philharmonie, Helsinki Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Berlin and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, as well as a return to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale.
■ Tickets range from €10 to €22.50 for the concert, which is supported by Stewart Construction. They are available from Opus 2 on High Street in Galway City, online at www.musicforgalway.ie, or call (091) 705962.
