Abbott pull-out triggers jobs crisis

There are fears that Galway is facing a devastating jobs crisis following the closure of city based medical devices company Abbott Vascular with the loss of 500 jobs, and the scrapping of plans to create up to 1,500 more.

Because on top of that, the dramatic decision is expected to put intense pressure on the city’s biggest manufacturing employer, Boston Scientific.

The Connacht Tribune can exclusively reveal that Abbott had plans to eventually employ 2,000 people at a new facility in the east of the city.

But instead workers were told on Tuesday afternoon that the facility in the Mervue Business Park will be ‘wound down’ over the next 10 months, with the doors closing for the final time in September.
