Abandoned horses in county bordering on crisis
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The number of horses being abandoned in the county is ‘bordering a crisis situation’.
That’s according to Director of emergency services at the County Council, Eugene Cummins, who says 250 horses and ponies have been siezed so far this year.
Eugene Cummins told this week’s meeting of the county joint policing committee that lifting 250 horses was a measure of the problem and not the success of the local authority.
He added that many welfare issues surrounding the animals were ‘frightening and upsetting’, and it was important that this ‘horific situation’ come to an end as soon as possible.

Eugene Cummins says many of the 250 horses and ponies have been knowingly abandoned and the vast majority are unclaimed.
He says on top of it all, the process requires huge resources and is very costly.
He’s expected to speak to other stakeholders this week about addressing on what he claims is bordering on a crisis situation.
