A refreshed Galway United keen to sustain title charge

GALWAY United return to action after the midseason break with a trip to the east coast on Friday to take on a Bray Wanderers side that has found a bit of form after a poor start to the campaign (7.45pm).

John Caulfield says the midseason break came at the right time for his side, and he gave his players the first week off to recharge the batteries, before returning to training last Monday week as they head into the second half of the season right in the frame for the title.

“If you had said to me before the start of the season that we would go into the midseason break just a point off the top, I’d have been happy with that. Cork are right up there, as expected, and Waterford are on a great run, and have a new manager as well.

“Longford maybe have an outside shot, but you have to think that the title is between ourselves, Cork and Waterford, so there are an exciting few months ahead, and we are looking forward to the challenge,” he told Tribune Sport this week.

The meeting in the Carlisle Grounds is between two sides who have as good as identical records against each other: in the 70 previous meetings between the sides, there have been 27 wins apiece and 16 draws, with United just shading the scoring tally with 92 goals across those 70 games as opposed to 91 for Bray.

United have had the edge this season, recording a 3-1 win in the Carlisle Grounds in March, and following that with a 2-0 win at Eamonn Deacy Park in April, as Bray made a poor start to the season, losing their first three games.
