A night of shirts and slaps marks return of live Oscars

Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

So, after waiting up late and enduring hours of tedious speeches, they didn’t even show The Slap in the edited replay of the Oscars. Rather than watching excerpts on Youtube and TV, I had wanted to soak up the atmosphere of the room following the astonishing altercation between actor Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock.

After initially laughing at the jibe about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith looking as if she should be in GI Jane 2 – in reference to her shaved head – Smith reacted to the eye rolls of his missus and strode up the stage and slapped him across the face.

Pinkett Smith has publicly discussed her battle with alopecia which has caused hair loss and the 50-year-old decided to shave it all off on the advice of her daughter.

Smith returned to his seat, where he shouted twice: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth”. When he was called to the stage shortly afterwards to accept the Academy Award for best actor for playing the father of the tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard, he was in tears.

“Art imitates life, I look the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things.”

On a night where history was made when Troy Kotsur became the first deaf male actor to win a gong for the film Coda – which deservedly took the best film award with a predominately deaf cast – it was a let-down not to air the entire affair.
