Galway book place in league semi-finals thanks to hard-fought win
Galway 2-16
Wexford 4-8
GALWAY will continue their spring voyage into March after surviving a late Wexford onslaught on Sunday to book their place in the National League semi-finals.
Leading 2-15 to 3-8 with three minutes remaining, the Tribeswomen looked to have finally put the home challenge to rest before they dealt with a barrage of attacks in the final moments.
Una Leacy has terrorised Galway defences for a decade and showed again that she is as lethal as any forward in the game. Her second goal on 57 minutes brought Wexford back within a point before Rebecca Hennelly struck Galway’s final score.
This was a round-robin contest but it was effectively a knock-out clash. Both teams had two wins and were playing for the Group One runners-up spot behind Cork. Only one point separated them on score difference. Wexford had to win and they didn’t go down without a fight.
During the game Joanne Dillon forced a Sarah Dervan block; Stacey Kehoe’s fierce ground stroke went wide; another Dillon effort saw Caitriona Daly produce the save; and when Leacy did find the net referee Eamon Cassidy had blown his whistle for a Wexford injury.
