Galway Bay fm newsroom – 90 schools across the county will be awarded Green Flags today in recognition of their efforts to tackle litter and waste.
An Taisce’s Green Flag scheme challenged schools all over Ireland to go green by becoming more aware of energy usage, water conservation and climate change.
90 percent of all primary and secondary schools in Ireland participated in the programme during the last school year.
They’ve shown a waste reduction per capita of 7.65 kilograms per year, electricity reduction of 24 kilowatts per year, and significant reductions in water and fuel usage – saving over 8 million euro.
The awards will be presented to Galway county schools at 10.30 this morning in the Radisson Blu Hotel in the city, while the city schools will receive their Green flags at 1 o’clock this afternoon.
