684 PRIVATE OPERATIONS CARRIED OUT ON GALWAY PUBLIC PATIENTS

Almost 700 private operations were carried out on public patients at Galway University Hospitals in the first five months of this year.

It comes as health chiefs attempt to cut treatment delays by making hospitals more efficient.

Figures obtained by the Irish Independent reveal the recent decline in numbers waiting for treatment was only made possible by outsourcing the care of public patients.
