6 million euro sanctioned for city wastewater treatment plant
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Mutton Island wastewater treatment plant in the city is to get a major upgrade.
The Department of the Environment has sanctioned 6.4 million euro in capital funding for the project.
The money will be allocated to the City Council to accept a tender for the work.
Mutton Island Wastewater Treatment Works currently serves a population of 91 thousand 600.
This latest investment will increase its capacity to serve a population of up to 160 thousand for a 20 year period.
Earlier this year the Council voted to approve and application to get a loan of more than 3 million euro as part of its contribution to the project, but that loan has not been drawn down yet.
Irish Water will take over the running of the Mutton Island plant from next January.
Galway Fine Gael Senator, Hildegarde Naughton says it’s important the city has the infrastructure to promote itself for investment.
