There are almost 6,000 outstanding Garda arrest warrants that have yet to be executed by Gardaí in the Galway Garda Division, new figures reveal.
The Department of Justice has confirmed that a total of 5,932 Garda warrants remain unexecuted in Galway as of mid-July of this year.
Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, stressed that “the vast majority of warrants do not relate to violent or the more serious category of offences”.
A breakdown of the figures shows 976 bench warrants, 128 committal warrants and 4,828 penal warrants remain unexecuted or are outstanding for the Galway Garda Division.
Minister Shatter explained that “most of the warrants that which are recorded as unexecuted are penal warrants, which relate to the payment of fines with imprisonment arising as a consequence of failure to pay”.
