59 new taxi spaces have been allocated for the city in a bid to deal with issues such as double parking and dangerous driving.

This means the number of permanent taxi spaces will be increased from 71 to 110, with 43 temporary taxi spaces introduced.

At last evening’s city council meeting, members raised concerns over ‘trouble’ areas in the city such as Forster Street and O’Briens Bridge which are consistently crowded with taxis.

Eyre Square was also mentioned as a trouble spot, with taxis packing the ranks.

City manager Joe McGrath says he expects taxi drivers to use the new spaces appropriately.
