537 GALWAY OFFENDERS JAILED LAST YEAR

537 Galway residents were sent to prison last year.

The figures published in the Irish Prison Service Annual report reveal that of these, only 11 percent were women.

A total of 478 men and 59 women with addresses from across the city and county were committed to prison in 2011.

Although this does not represent any major increase on the 2010 figure, there was a 25 percent increase on the numbers jailed between 2009 and 2010.

In the five year period from 2007 to 2011, two thousand 281 people were sent to jail.

The 2011 Galway gender breakdown is mirrored nationally where just over 19 hundred women were sent to prison out of a total of just under 14 thousand.
