50 PROTESTORS GATHER AT COUNTY BUILDINGS OVER TUAM RIGHT OF WAY
Date Published: 22-Oct-2012
"Save our public right of way"
That’s the message from a group of up to 50 protestors from Tuam who have gathered at County Buildings this afternoon.
The group are opposed to changes to the Palace Road in Tuam leading from Bishop street to the Palace grounds, and associated development works at a car park there.
The demonstration is being held as Councillors hold their monthly meeting where the matter makes up two items on their agenda.
The Councillors will this afternoon consider a report under Section 183 of the Local Government Act 2001 on the disposal of just over point 2 hectares at Bishop Street in Tuam.
They will also consider a proposal under Section 73 of the Roads Act 1993 to extinguish a public Right of Way.
This involves a section of the swimming pool road in the townland of Demesne from its junction with Bishop Street to its junction with the new inner relief road, a length of one hundred and sixty two metres.
Tuam resident and Sawdoctors band member Leo Moran of the "Restore Our Palace Road" campaign group is calling on councillors to reject a proposal to hand over the public road and to also reject the proposed extinguishment of the right of way.
