Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost four thousand people were forced to wait on trollies for admission to the emergency department at UHG last year.

Figures compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that this represents a 6 percent decrease on 2012.

In Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, there were 813 patients on trollies last year compared to 821 in 2012 – a decrease of less than 1 percent.

Nationally, over 67 thousand patients waited for admission to a hospital bed last year compared with over 66 thousand the previous year.

The nurses union says there were improvements in some hospitals around the country including Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda, Sligo and the Mater in Dublin.
