Loughrea is set to benefit from a major funding boost of 425 thousand euro from the Department of Transport. (20/9)

As part of the Smarter Travel initiative, road safety in the town will be enhanced and improved to encourage residents to make healthy travel choices by walking and cycing instead of driving.

This will include the introduction of new pedestrian crossings, cycle paths and a green way linking the west side of the town.

Following a submission from the County Council, Loughrea was selected as a national example for better travel and a review of the future changes will later be carried out to assess how the scheme has benefited the community.

Junior Minister at the Department of Education and Skills and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon says that the local authority has been given approval to start the works immediately.
