Galway Bay fm newsroom – An estimated 1 thousand euro is being spent every day on paying Gardaí to maintain a presence at two bogs in South East Galway.

According to the Irish Independent, the money is being spent to pay overtime to Gardaí who must prevent illegal turf cutting at Clonmoylan and Barroughter.

The figure is based on the overtime pay-scale for Gardaí.

Under the EU Habitats Directive, a turf-cutting ban was introduced on 53 raised bogs in Ireland, 13 of which are in Galway.
