3 THOUSAND GALWAY BUILDINGS REQUIRE ENERGY UPGRADE
Date Published: 08-Oct-2012
2 thousand 900 Galway buildings need energy upgrades every year if the government is to meet the terms of an EU Energy Efficiency Directive.
That’s according to research conducted by the SERVE project, Sustainable Energy for the Rural Village Environment.
The Directive was adopted by the European Parliament last month and is expected to come into force in November.
EU member states will face fines should they fail to comply with the initiative which aims to drive energy efficiency improvements in households, industry and transport sectors.
The EU funded SERVE project has carried out research as part of a five year project in North Tipperary and has delivered an investment of 10.5 million in sustainable energy in the region.
Seamus Hoyne of the project team says homes and businesses in Galway city and county are wasting thousands of euro on heating poorly insulated buildings.
