200 construction jobs if city port extension gets go-ahead
Galway Bay fm newsroom – 200 construction jobs could be created per year, for a period of three years, if the proposed city port expansion gets the go ahead.
Galway Harbour Company lodged the eight folder planning application with An Bord Pleanala today.
It follows some 200 meetings with various bodies and stakeholders.
The 27 hectare extension aims to move commercial shipping out of the medieval harbour into a purpose built multi-modal port which would accommodate much larger vessels.
Three million euro has been spent on the plans to date.
The overall plan had originally been estimated to cost 200 million euro – this has now been scaled back to cost 126 million euro.
It’s hoped all four stages of the project could be complete by 2017.
Speaking at a special briefing today, Galway Harbour Company CEO Eamon Bradshaw said the project would be funded through a number of avenues.
