60% unhappy with City Councillors’ salaries and allowances

Just 20% of respondents in an online poll believe that Galway’s City Councillors earn too much for what they do.

Readers were asked to give their opinions on the topic ‘Galway City Councillors earn a basic salary of €16,565 each year plus other allowances’.

However, salaries accounted for only about 60% of the total cost of the councillors of €400,000 in 2014.

Allowance made up the balance of €187,000 and the people seem to have an issue with that as a further 40% said they should not receive allowances meaning that 60% of respondents were unhappy with the overall cost of the councillors.

The original story appeared in the City Tribune on 17th April and can be found here.

The full poll results were:

‘Galway City Councillors earn a basic salary of €16,565 each year plus other allowances. Tell us what you think.’

12% – It’s too much

8% – They should not be paid at all

9% – It’s too little

40% – The salary is OK but they shouldn’t get allowances

31% – It’s fair because of the time they put into the role
