2,000 IRONMAN COMPETITORS DESCEND ON CITY

Over 2,000 competitors from 42 countries around the world will participate in the Ironman competition in Galway this weekend.

The event, which has been described as the ‘Formula One of Triathlons’ involves a 1.2 mile swim in Galway Bay, a 56 mile cycle out to Maam and a 13 mile run around the city.

The competition kicks off at Ladies Beach, Salthill at 7am on Sunday.

The Ironman festival kicked off today with an Expo at Salthill Park and registration for athletes at Leisureland.

A pasta party for participants will take place at the Galway Bay Hotel at 6 o’ clock this evening and various events will also take place in Moycullen and Oughterard over the weekend.
