165 specialist heart emergencies called into Galway hospitals
Galway bay fm newsroom -There have been 165 Code STEMI calls to Galway University Hospital so far this year.
64 of these calls came from the Galway area with the rest coming from Sligo, Letterkenny and Mayo.
STEMI, or ST- Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, is the more severe of the two possible types of heart attack.
In this case, the coronary artery becomes completely clotted and the heart muscles supplied by the artery begin to die.
Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, or PPCI was rolled out nationally by the HSE this January, and it is the treatment of choice for STEMI cases.
PPCI is a minimally invasive procedure where blocked arteries are cleared using balloon catheters and stents.
