15 jobs gone in Xtra-Vision closure
Around fifteen jobs are expected to be lost with the closure of at least two Xtra-Vision outlets in Galway.
Management have blamed the closures on the “continued decline in DVD rentals”.
A total of 28 premises nationwide – some of which ‘double-up as HMV music stores – will close by the end of January as part of a cost-cutting programme.
A spokesperson was not able to confirm which of the Galway stores will close, although this newspaper understands that the premises in Galway Shopping Centre on the Headford Road and beside Joyce’s Supermarket in Knocknacarra are to shut their doors.
“Reflecting the changing dynamic in consumer behaviour as customers favour the retail opportunity in the entertainment market, Xtra-Vision is condensing its store portfolio to a smaller number of focused retail locations, while remaining dedicated to its investment in Xtra-Vision Express; its vending machines operation, and its online channels, which are proving increasingly popular with customers,” a company statement reads.
O’Brien’s off-licence in Galway Shopping Centre is set to relocate to the former video store units within the complex.
Lindat Ltd – part of Harcourt Developments which owns the centre – has sought planning permission for a change of use the two adjoining units from retail and commercial to an off-licence.
