13 PER CENT VACANCY RATE IN GALWAYS COMMERCIAL PREMISES

There are just over 1600 vacant commercial premises in Galway city and county which represents a 13 per cent vacancy rate.

This is just above the national average vacancy rate of 11 per cent according to the first GeoView Quarterly Commercial Premises Vacancy Rates Report.

These figures are published in the week that city officials admitted they are becoming increasingly concerned about the fall in income from commercial rates and water.

Cllr Padraig Conneely said this problem needs to be looked at nationally as rates are critical to financing a city.

At this week’s council meeting he cited the example of one city business which owes 900 thousand euro in rates to the city council.
