Taoiseach Enda Kenny yesterday officially announced the creation of 115 new jobs at Cisco Systems in Oranmore as part of a €26 million investment by the American giant.
Mr Kenny said the investment was a strong vote of confidence in Ireland by one of the world’s largest and most successful technology companies.
As first revealed by the Galway City Tribune last week, the new jobs will be a major boost for the region, and will see the company require a new building – already the nearby former Tom Dempsey Furniture building has been inspected by management and IDA officials.
Mr Kenny attributed the expansion to Galway’s highly-skilled workforce and pool of graduates and said it would continue to grow the Information Communications Technology (ICT) hub here.
Speaking at the announcement yesterday morning, the Taoiseach said: “The new project unveiled today will expand the mandate of the Cisco Galway R&D centre into new business areas that will lead to new investment, revenue and jobs.
“It is the staff and management here on the ground who can take the most credit for today’s expansion announcement.
“Time and again multinational companies cite the talent of the people of Ireland as their primary reason for locating investments here and this is definitely true of Cisco. Galway offers Cisco a highly-skilled, innovative, and passionate workforce.”
Cisco Systems has been keen to expand its presence in Galway, after it emerged late last year that it was performing well ahead of expectations.
Already, Cisco employs around 180 people in Oranmore Business Park, which houses Research and Development laboratories, as well as a European Customer Interaction Centre.
