Over 11 million euro is to be invested in water infrastructure in Athenry.

The funding has been announced by Environment Minister Phil Hogan to upgrade and expand the existing wastewater treatment plant and sewer network facility.

It’ll cater for both the immediate and long-term expansion of the town.

The proposed works will include an additional process stream with a capacity of three thousand population equivalent and equipment upgrade at the plant.

Galway East TD and Junior Minister Ciaran Cannon says contract documents are being prepared and the scheme will address a number of long-standing capacity issues at the plant.
