100 trees face the axe as expert recommends their removal

Galway City Tribune – A tree expert has recommended felling almost 100 conifers in the Claddagh.

Arboriculture consultants hired by Galway City Council concluded that a hedge of trees at Grattan Park estate should be removed and replaced.

Council officials have agreed to meet with residents about the latest report, which recommends removing trees at a verge on the eastern side of Grattan Park, which defines the boundary to the rear of homes on Fr Burke Road.

The hedge comprises 99 evergreen Lawson cypress, as well as a Birch, a Field maple, a Holm oak and dead maple.

The Lawson trees, between 10-12 metres tall, have been topped in the past, which has resulted in multiple growth. A number of trees have suffered storm damage, and have shed large branches into adjoining gardens. The trees are close to the boundary wall – closer than is recommended – and in places their branches are resting on the wall.
