100 STAFF TO RETIRE AT GALWAY PUBLIC HOSPITALS

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisations claims a further 100 staff retirements at public hospitals in Galway will result in a curtailment of services.

80 full time staff at Galway University Hospital and Merlin Park Hospital are retiring this month, while 20 will retire from Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

The HSE West has admitted that managing staff reductions will represent a significant challenge, but have agreed to carry out a review next month.

The HSE West service plan will be discussed at a meeting of the Regional Health Forum at Merlin Park this afternoon.
