100 PERCENT INCREASE IN THEFT FROM PERSON

There’s been a 100 percent increase in the number of thefts from person in the city.

Figures presented at this week’s joint policing committee show that 36 such incidents were recorded in the first eight months of this year.

A similar increase is noted in all forms of theft with a 21 percent rise in the number of MPV thefts, and a 5 percent jump in thefts from shop.

The 6 month data showed a 12 percent drop in burglaries which was queried by City Mayor Terry O’Flaherty who said there was an enormous amount of jewellery being taken from houses.

Chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee Padraig Conneely said the huge increase in theft from person reflects the current economic conditions.

This was echoed by Garda Chief Superintendent Michael O’Sullivan who also advised that there are other contributing factors
